Demurrage and detention: from operational challenges towards solutions

Abstract Reduced free time and increased fees for demurrage detention create organizational challenges with respect to intermodal transport. As a result, actors within the maritime supply chains are confronted greater complexity higher risk of costs; and, therefore, often fall back on transportation by truck from hinterland. That is why present research examines impact this evolution bottom line involved chain perspective. The approach consists reviewing relevant literature, analyzing available sector data obtained through interviews professional experience, validating proposed solutions. Starting results, problem-solving discussions resulted in following top three as feasible solutions: digitalization, extra ‘free time’ hinterland locations, more attention during negotiation process.
